Decide if you’re willing to live in a house under construction

The normal amount of tear out and demolition along with the disruption of noise and daily intermittence of water/electricity availability often make life a challenge if you live at home during the work.

For those who work at home, the challenges can be even more daunting. Consider how you’ll handle the traffic, interruptions, dust, noise and make sure to buy a computer battery back up!

For some, a basement remodel is easier than a kitchen remodel to live through while staying in the home, given the typical remoteness of the work being done downstairs. For some who decide to stay during a kitchen remodel, a temporary kitchen often suffices for survival. But, for a family of four or more that utilizes the kitchen for cooking/food prep, homework, bill paying, and feeding pets, a temporary move out of the home during construction, should be considered.

For some Addition projects, construction traffic and noise may be able to be minimized, since an addition is usually built to the “Dry-In” stage, which means it attaches to the home until the existing home is opened to the new construction. This allows for a large amount of construction to be done before it affects the family; however, it does not eliminate external forces of the project that may also impact life.
